Movies and Music
by Leila Dayne
I have this obsessive compulsion with movies and music. I need them like air and water. It’s more dire with music but movies have been inching their way up the ladder. I’ll get hooked on a handful of movies and watch them over and over. I have NetFlix on my iPad so at night when I can’t sleep I like to watch whatever random movie I can find until I fall asleep.
I have a tv in my room but only have it connected to a dvd player because I know myself well enough to know that I would have a very hard time getting work done if I had a cable box connected. (Since I don’t have an official office and my desk is generally so cluttered I predominantly work from my bed. As I am at this moment.) So at night if I don’t feel like risking falling asleep and rolling over on my iPad, I throw a dvd in. I have a handful of movies I cycle through religiously. Boondock Saints, 500 Days of Summer, Wedding Crashers, every Transformers movie (a long time fav series of the Tiny Human as well.), pretty much anything with Mila Kunis or Brittany Murphy, Baby Mama, Date Night and Midnight in Paris.
I loved this movie from the very get go.
I had watched it so many times, it finally got relinquished back to the shelf. Awaiting a time where I couldn’t watch the entire movie with my eyes closed and still know every facial expression the actors were making off the audio alone.
I was reminded of how much I love this movie by a gorgeous valentines mixtape delivered to my inbox courtesy of my friend Dirty South Joe from Philly. Joe never ceases to amaze me with the creativity and emotion he can inject into tracks and when he teamed up with Flufftronix a few years back to create Luvstep (a combination of love songs and dubstep) I nearly fainted.
Beautiful lyrics and voices layered with bass and hyponotizing beats?! A new heaven had been built for me.
They don’t put out a ton of mixes so each one is cherished by me and played and over played and memorized as I wait for the next one to magically be delivered. Each one begins with dialog from well known scenes from romance movies. (Forest Gump, The Notebook, 10 Things I Hate About You, Dirty Dancing, Spiderman) So of course I was ecstatic to hear that the newest installment opened with one of my favourite lines from Midnight in Paris.
The dialog in the movie goes…
Gil: Hi Mr. Hemingway.
Ernest Hemingway: The assignment was to take the hill. There were four of us, five if you counted Vicente, but he had lost his hand when a grenade went off and couldn’t fight as could when I first met him. And he was young and brave, and the hill was soggy from days of rain. And it sloped down toward a road and there were many German soldiers on the road. And the idea was to aim for the first group, and if our aim was true we could delay them.
Gil: Were you scared?
Ernest Hemingway: Of what?
Gil: Of getting killed.
Ernest Hemingway: You’ll never write well if you fear dying. Do you?
Gil: Yeah, I do. I’d say probably, might be my greatest fear actually.
Ernest Hemingway: It’s something all men before you have done, all men will do.
Gil: I know, I know.
Ernest Hemingway: Have you ever made love to a truly great woman?
Gil: Actually, my fiancé is pretty sexy.
Ernest Hemingway: And when you make love to her you feel true and beautiful passion? And you for at least that moment lose your fear of death?
Gil: No, that doesn’t happen.
Ernest Hemingway: I believe that love that is true and real, creates a respite from death. All cowardice comes from not loving, or not loving well, which is the same thing. And when the man who is brave and true looks death squarely in the face like some rhino hunters I know, or Belmonte, who’s truly brave. It is because they love with sufficient passion to push death out of their minds, until the return that it does to all men. And then you must make really good love again. Think about it.
That last line has always been the best part of the movie to me. Always stood out. So it was cool to see that it struck a chord with my friend as well. And then to follow it up with another favourite song that most people hadn’t even heard?! I was floating on cloud 9!!
This song is undeniably beautiful.
